1. MoLaa is a museum of Latin American art of artists who have lived and worked in Latin America. It was founded in 1996 by Robert Gumbiner. The museum relates to the class because the class is about Latin American art, and so is the museum.

I came across while looking at the artists on the MoLaa web sight I looked at his work and really liked it. It is something I would put up in my room. Brunet was born in 1964 and is from Mexico City.

observation: In this piece I see many different bright colors, flowers, stars, clouds, waves, butterflies. It is a painting made of an acrylic linen. It is a contemporary style. It was created in 2007.

Interpretation: I think this artwork is about happiness because of all the bright colors. I feel he was very happy when painting this piece.

Judgement: I chose this piece because it is definitely something I would choose when decorating. I love the colors, and different designs Brunet uses. It is very girlish. The colors are all my favorite colors.

Questioning: I do know that this piece is made of and when however I would like to know what exactly it is supposed to be or show. I would like to know what she wants people to see from it.

I came across this piece when researching the Virgin of Guadalupe for assignment 5a. It connects to the study of humanities because the Virgin of Guadalupe was discovered by Juan Diego during the Independence period of Latin America.

OBSERVATION In this piece I see a picture drawn of the Virgin DE Guadalupe. She is looking down or has her eyes closed as if she is praying, and See also has her hands in the praying position. A baby is holding her up from underneath her. She is bordered with flowers, which most likely resembles the flowers she gave Juan to give proof to the bishop that she would appear.

INTERPRETATION This picture is about the Virgin De Guadalupe being the mother goddess to all of Mexico, because she sent Juan Diego to be her messenger and tell the Bishop that she was there and wanted a shrine built for her.

JUDGMENT I chose this work of art because I enjoyed learning about the Virgin De Guadalupe. I think it is a well put together piece and shows her value well.

QUESTIONING I know why everyone worships the Virgin De Guadalupe, and her importance. However I would like to know who painted the first original piece of her, and where it is located today.

I had a hard time finding out about the independence period, every sight I opened I found different information. I decided to use wikipedia because it seemed the most credible. the Independence Period took place in the 19Th century. The main goal was to be free on the Spanish colonies in the Americas. The result ended in all the countries under Spanish rule being free from it. Latin Americans independence occurred because of the Age of Enlightenment. It influenced all of the Atlantic revolutions.

The Virgin of Guadalupe
I chose the Virgin of Guadalupe because I know she is important in the Mexican culture but do not really know anything about her, and would like to. She is known as a mestiza goddess and the Mother of all people. She is a mix between Spanish and indigenous. With the Virgin of Guadalupe being so powerful, Mexico soon became independent, and there was no need for the Spanish. To not believe in her is an offense.

Juan Diego
I chose Juan Diego because he relates to The Virgin of Guadalupe. He was named Cuauhtlatoatzin which meant the talking eagle. He was a member of Chichimeca people. He is most important because he is the person who reported the Virgin of Guadalupe. While Juan was on his way to mass the Blessed Mother appeared and asked him to go ask the the Bishop to have a shrine built for her. The Bishop wanted proof therefor the Blessed Mother had roses grow in the winter and had Juan bring them to the Bishop which he did. When Juan brought the flowers to the Bishop, the flowers fell to the ground and an image of the Blessed Mother appeared. When Juan Diego died he was buried as "Our Lady's 'messenger'" in the first church dedicated to The Virgin of Guadalupe.

Fray Bartolome
I chose him because he was a brave man. Fray Bartolome was a Spanish Dominican who stood up for American Native people's rights. He was named Defender of the Indians because he stood up against the horrors of the conquest and the colonization of the new world.

Culture can have many different meaning, depending on how you want to use it. According to the Princeton word net search it is the civilization, the arts that are favored in the society, the attitudes, behavior and views of the society.

I choose to use 3a Kendra's blog about the Maya's. She examined the city of Chichen Itza. The town has one Major well, which is their only permanent water source. A tradition that the Maya's have is to throw live bodies into the well as sacrifices for the rain god, who was said to live in the down inside the well. This relates to Freire because he had his certain believes, as did the Maya's. Many people outside of the culture probably disagreed with this, as did people disagree with Freire's teachings at one point or another.

I choose to use Adriana'a 4a blog about La Malinche. She was a very smart talented girl who spoke many different languages such as Spanish, Mayan and Aztec. She was always trying to help the natives, and give them what they wanted. La Malinche was however considered a trader when she gave birth to a "Mexican" which was a mix of Spaniard and native. She played a big role in the converting to Christianity, and while doing so she stopped many natives from getting slaughtered by the Spaniards. This relates to Fiere because he was disliked and went to prison for trying to better his country. Later they both ended up being remembered more as hero then a villain.

I came across this photo while researching Junipero Serra in last weeks assignment. I liked it because it was a visual of one the Missions. It connects to my study of humanitites because Junipero Serra a great missionary died there at the mission San Carlos Borromeo.

OBSERVATION: It is a photo done in black and white. The Mission looks like it is made of stone or brick, and there is a lot of dust and dirt around the building. The left side of the building looks like it is falling apart.

INTERPERTATION: The art work is about being the famous spot where Junipero Serra spent the last of his life, and died there on August 28th 1784 when he was 74 years old.

JUDGEMENT: I choose this peice because I thought it was important to know where Junipero spent the last of his life. I wish the picture was in color so more details could be shown, however there were not color camaras back then. Otherwise I think it is a nice photograph.

QUESTIONING: I would like to know a little big more about this piece, beside the fact that it is in Monteray California, and that Junipero Serra spent his last days there. For example I would like to know when the Mission was first built, and by whom. It would aslo be nice to know who took the photo, so that person can get some credit for it.

The colonial period took place 1429-1810 and it is the reason Latin America is the way it is today. Before the arrival of the Spanish the population of Mexico was 19 million, in 1550 it drooped by 2 million. Majority of people died from diseases such as smallpox. The native culture and religion was shot down, because of the conquistadors who burned down entire libraries. As well as putting a hold on the Latin American culture the conquistadors also killed all the power structures which took all power away from the natives. Since the conquistadors could not read native writing of their records, it was rewritten, which makes it hard to recall Latin American history. The conquistadors were each given land, which came with natives who the conquistadors were supposed to look over, but instead made them slaves. The colonial period was a sad difficult time for Latin America.

For my topic I chose Junipero Serra. Photos in the YouTube video are what drew me to him. I loved the architecture of the houses and the landscape. I also thought it was cool that he is the one who founded the first missions in California considering I live in California. In the video you can expect to see great pictures, and hear valuable information. The other source I used is a biography from the San Francisco museum.

Junipero Serra was monk at age sixteen of St. Francis, which is where he got his name, before being Junipero Serra his name was Miguel Jose. Even before he got his degree of Doctor he was asked to do philosophy lectures, and became a noted preacher who was often invited to visit other towns.

Junipero Serra studied the lives of many different saints, the ones that inspired him most were Saint Javier from India and Saint Francis Salano from Peru. Religion was very important to him, everything he did revolved around it.

At age 36 he decided to become a missionary of the New World and went to San Louis Potsi for 9 years. Around 7 years later he went to Upper California, which is the last place he went and founded Missions. In 1784 he died at age 71 on one of the missions called San Carlos Borromeo.

I believe the sources I used are credible because the first one I used was the YouTube link given in the assignment, and the other is from the San Francisco Museum, and I can not see why that would not be valid information.

Matthew's Blog
Matthew explains how Feiere taught 300 people how to read and write, to be literate By this happening he helped the Brazilian culture better themselves. Being literate is the most important think to be able to succeed in the community. Without literacy one can not read, write, and most importantly vote, and help the country change. Later after the changes he made in Brazil he was imprisoned for 70 days which actually ended up being positive, because he was forced to exile his country. With being forced to exile he could go to other countries and spread his ideas to different countries.

Stephanie's Blog:
Stephanie explains Friere's way of teaching his philosophy of praxis the process of which reflection becomes action. His way of teaching was different than the common education his involves learning from students as well as educating. Friere believed education should not be simple information into students heads like the government demands. Friere thinks the current education system is dehumanizing He believes education to be an act of liberation, that one learns from the world not just from a teacher. Friere's method of teaching is to humanize students, to think critically, use critical action.

I believe that Friere's idea's do relate to this class. In this class we all learn from each other, as well as being educated. We are free to look at other students blog posts, and are actually encouraged to. I have learned a variety of information from other students by reading their blog posts. When we have assignments we have directions but also freedom to choose how we want to do the assignment. For example this assignment we were able to choose whatever classmate me wanted to. For another assignment we could choose between different cultures, whichever one we felt we were interested in. Both are ways this class can relate to Friere's ideas.

Assignment 3B

http://maya-archaeology.org/Maya_textiles_weaving_table_cloths_napkins/clothing_textiles_san_anton.jpg
This is a photo of a Maya textile that I came across while doing assignment 3A. I was just browsing through the web about the culture and I found out that they were known for their textiles. This caught my attention because in my Anthro class we are studying Native American textiles, and think they are all beautiful. It takes a lot of time and hard work to complete one.

1) OBSERVATION: This textile has many different colors, and shapes, which are all symbolic. The diamond shape is a symbol of the universe and the path of the suns daily movement; east, west, north, and south. The corner designs is the tail of a scorpion. The different colors in the textile come from different plant materials, animals, seashells, clay, and other minerals. Textiles are most commonly warn on women known as a huipil, which is still worn in Guatamala and Mexico. They are usually woven using the brocade tecnique. All Maya communities have different designs, and it is uncommon to wear desigins of another community.

2) The artwork of the textile is mainly to show the tribes religion and tribal affiliation.

3)As I said earlier I choose this art of textiles because I am studying them right now in my Anthro class. I appreciate all the time and effort these weavers put into the textile. The talent to make these are amazing to me, for example all the symbols and different colors they weave into the textile.

Assignment 3a

Pre-Colombian
Pre-Colombian takes place in 14,000 B.P. and refers to the era before European influence and commonly the era before Christopher Columbus. Pre- Colombian people were people of Mesoamerica, and the Andes.

The Maya Culture
I really don’t know anything about any of these cultures, however watching all the clips, this one seemed the most interesting. The idea of lost temples and mysteries got my attention. It was interesting that the Mayans made their own written language, and built entire villages of stone.

Three interesting Facts
1) On the Yucatan Peninsula the village of Chichen Itza, Spanish records show that live victims were thrown into the well as a sacrifice to the rain god Chop who lived in it’s deaths. These wells were the villages only source of water. These wells are also where the name Chichen Itza came from.

2) The Mayans are the only known culture of Pre-Colombia to have a fully developed written language, which was created during the Pre-classic period. Along with their own language they also developed with the help of Mesoamerican cultivations the calendar and epigraphy

3) Today Mayan people still use traditions, beliefs and languages of Pre-Colombian times. The Achi' language, is still widely used today. Rabinal Achí, is a play written in the language and was “declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005.” (Wikipedia)

Sources and why they are credible.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyvw6G9Max0
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_civilization
I believe these are credible sites because the YouTube video I used is from one of the links given The Wikipedia, is known to be a legitatment source. Last semester in my speech class a student did classmate did a presentation on Wikipedia, explaining how is now a reliable source.

Assignment 2a

What is Interdisciplinary Studies?
Students and parents often ask us, "What is Interdisciplinary Studies?" I like to use the analogy of vision. If you think about how a lizard sees, even though it has two eyes, it does not experience depth. Because the eyes are separated on its head and it cannot compare the information it gets from two eyes, a lizard lives in a flat world. But human beings' eyes are in the front of our heads, and our brains get information about the same object from both eyes. By comparing that different information, our brain allows us to live in a world with depth. Interdisciplinary Studies works like that. It allows students to get more than one point of view on the same topic, and by comparing and contrasting, connecting and separating the information provided by separate disciplines, new dimensions of information appear, analogous to the dimension of depth that appears when the eyes become binocular.

FUN FACT!
The barrier reef off the coast of Belize is almost 185 miles long and comes within 10-40 miles of the mainland, making it the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere.

I believe the sources I used a reputable because on the sights they have sources, customer service, phone numbers and locations. Some of them end in edu which is a ligament sight. Lastly I looked at more than one website before using the one I did and they all said the same information.

Most people have similar things in common, from what I noticed, majority live within 10 miles of the JC; have blogged on MySpace or face book, and think of the Caribbean as a relaxing place. Looking at Shalena’s page we have in common that we both think of vacation when we think of the Caribbean, both work from a PC, and we both have MySpace and face book page but have never posted a blog before. The second blogger I looked at was Brittany which I'm very surprised she lives 63 miles from campus! We are both taking this class to fulfill GE requirements, and are both currently taking Anthropology. We also both work from a PC.

Assignment 1c

The first blog I looked at was Ashley Symes who is taking this class to get a better understanding of different cultures. She hopes to see everything while she is still young.I learned from reading her Paulo Friere assignment that Paulo grew up in an average household, with three siblings. He is very interested in teaching others and having them understand the world. When someone can understand the world they can lead others through Paulo’s teachings.

The second blogger I looked at was Beau and on January 20 he was training to be a CDAR for the coast guard. While reading her Paulo Friere assignment I learned that Paulo was talented enough to teach 300 people to read in 45 days. Paulo Friere wrote books, and the one he is most known for is “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” which was published in 1968 and again in English in 1970.
